FB + Twitter reports on Fusionopolis incident faster than News

by James Chan on 3 Jul ’09

It’s a tad morbid, but I thought I should highlight this for the speed at which social media reports on breaking (and highly controversial) news faster than traditional media can, even in a country as small as Singapore.  To think famous and respected New York Judge Richard Posner had the gall to propose banning the linking to newspaper articles online.  Should those idiots manage to get that through in the courts, I’m certain that’ll be the final nail in the coffin of print media.

Fusionopolis

A man falls/jumps off the 24th floor of Fusionopolis.  Suicide or accident? Shortly after, the Singapore social media scene exploded.

I‘m sure this will be all over traditional print newspapers tomorrow morning. In the meantime, be sure to check out Twitter and Facebook for more. As for me, it’s back to work.

Update: Strangely, our traditional media has avoided reporting on this.  Instead, news of an NSF officer dying after a Land Rover rolled over him made it to print instead.
