Singapore Elections 2011 – Results

The Singapore Elections 2011 is now over – the PAP has been returned to government. We can all go to bed.

PAP – 81 seats in 11 SMCs & 14 GRC
WP – 6 seat in 1 SMC & 1 GRC
NSP – 0
SDP – 0
SPP – 0
RP – 0

  • Best performer by % support – Amy Khor of Hong Kah North SMC; imho not a good reflection because of smaller sample set;
  • Top 3 best performing losers – Potong Pasir SMC (SPP), Joo Chiat SMC (WP), East Coast GRC (WP);
  • Historic win by Opposition, in beating the PAP at their own game – Aljunied GRC (WP); history has been made, 2 ministers and 1 future speaker of parliament has been taken out of action by WP;
  • Smallest margin of victory Potong Pasir (PAP) with just 114 votes; a pity, those 242 spoilt votes could have made a huge difference here;
  • SMC/GRC with largest proportion of voters in absentia – Holland-Bukit Timah GRC (PAP); where the heck were those 10,555 (11.53%) missing voters?
  • (IMHO) Most undeserving MP – Tin Pei Ling of PAP (Marine Parade GRC)
  • (IMHO) Most undeserving losing MP – George Yeo of PAP (Aljunied GRC)

There has also been a significant drop in PAP support (60.14%, down from 66.6%) across all electoral wards; the ruling party’s worst since independence. Only 4 wards (Radin Mas SMC, Hong Kah North SMC, Yuhua SMC & Jurong GRC) show support for the PAP equal to or higher than 66.66%.

My palms are sweating and I can’t stop fidgeting as I eagerly anticipate history in the making at the Singapore Elections 2011.  Since 9.30pm, the television has been bombarding us with advertisements, interspersed with newscasters prattling on about non-essentials, repeated playback of stadia supporter footage and rehashed elections videos. Frustrated, I turn to my Twitter (#sgelection OR #sgelections) search – via my mobile client of choice, Tweetdeck.

PAP, continue to ignore social media at your own peril. As your electorate ages, their eyes and ears will increasingly shift towards this medium, and if your online actions are anything to go by thus far, then you’ve got plenty of catching up to do. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s laudable-yet-hastily-organized Facebook chat, perceived by the majority of the online community as a photo op for mainstream media the next morning, was a missed opportunity to gain mindshare with Gen-Y voters. As much as I respect Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew for the hard work and sacrifices he and his family have made to make Singapore what it is today, his straight-talking shoot-from-the-hip style does the ruling party no wonders in today’s context, especially with younger voters. Combine that with the host of issues the electorate is displeased with, and you’re staring at a much-reduced support level across all of Singapore. The red klaxons should be blaring in your control room now.
